Silk & Iron Pendant Lantern | CLOK785

The Silk Lantern Pendant is a low, round lantern of tensioned silk panels held in a slim iron frame. It comes in three sizes: 40 cm (15.7″) wide and 16 cm (6.3″) high, 50 cm (19.7″) wide and 20 cm (7.9″) high, and 60 cm (23.6″) wide and 25 cm (9.8″) high. There are three colourways: black and white, white, and brown. It hangs over a dining table or kitchen island, or in a living room.

The shade

The silk is stretched taut across each panel of the frame, so the surface is smooth and even. Lit, the silk diffuses the light and shows only a soft glow, with the thin lines of the frame drawn across it. The white reads light and quiet, the brown is warmer and deeper, and the black and white is the most graphic of the three.

The frame

The frame is iron with a matte finish. It is kept slim so that the silk does the work and the lantern stays light in the room.

Why warm light matters

Silk takes on the colour of the light behind it. At 2700K white silk glows cream and brown silk turns a warm caramel. Cooler light makes both look flat and gray. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The 40 cm (15.7″) size suits a small round table, a breakfast nook or a bedroom. The 50 cm (19.7″) size suits a table for four, about 90 to 120 cm (35 to 47″). The 60 cm (23.6″) size suits a table of about 120 to 160 cm (47 to 63″) or a living room. Over a longer table or an island, hang two or three in a row. Over a table, hang the bottom 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35″) above the surface. Because the lantern is shallow, it keeps sightlines open across the room.

Suspension

The lantern hangs on a cord. The cord length is made longer or shorter to order to suit your ceiling.

The light

The light passes through the silk on all sides, so the lantern gives a soft, even ambient light with no glare. It does not throw a strong pool of light onto the table. Over a kitchen island, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

E27 lamp. Warm white LED at 2700K. The bulb is not included. The lantern weighs about 1.5 to 3 kg (3.3 to 6.6 lb) depending on size.

Care

Switch off and let the lamp cool. Dust the silk gently with a soft dry brush or a hairdryer on a cool setting. Keep water and cleaners away from the silk.

Made to order

Every lantern is made to order. The cord length can be set to your ceiling, and dimming is available on request.
