The Amber Murano-Style Glass Chandelier is two tiers of hand-blown amber glass discs on a solid brass ring, with an amber glass bowl at its centre beneath. It comes in three sizes: 60 cm (23.6″) wide and 28 cm (11″) high with six lights, 80 cm (31.5″) wide and 28 cm (11″) high with nine lights, and 95 cm (37.4″) wide and 36 cm (14.2″) high with twelve lights. It hangs on a 50 cm (19.7″) solid brass chain and suits a dining room, a living room, a library or an entrance hall.

The glass

Each disc is blown by hand, so the depth of amber, the surface texture and the way it lets light through vary from one disc to the next. The amber is warm and honeyed. It sits easily with walnut, leather, stone and warm-toned walls, and it gives the piece its mid-century character.

The frame

The discs hang from a ring structure of solid brass, with the hardware concealed. The chain and canopy are solid brass too. The brass is left unlacquered, so over the years it deepens into a warmer patina.

Why warm light matters

Amber glass takes on the temperature of the lamps behind it. At 2700K it glows a deep honey-gold; cooler light makes it look brown and flat. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The 60 cm (23.6″) suits a round or square table of about 110 to 150 cm (43 to 59″), a bedroom or a study. The 80 cm (31.5″) suits a table of about 150 to 200 cm (59 to 79″) or a living room. The 95 cm (37.4″) suits a table of about 200 to 250 cm (79 to 98″), a large living room or an entrance hall. Over a table, hang the bottom of the chandelier 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35″) above the surface.

Suspension

With the standard 50 cm (19.7″) chain, the 60 cm and 80 cm hang about 78 cm (31″) from the ceiling and the 95 cm about 86 cm (34″). Over a dining table that suits ceilings of roughly 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 8.5 ft). For higher ceilings, stairwells and double-height entrances, the chain is made longer, and it can be made shorter to order.

The light

The lamps sit within the tiers of glass, and the central bowl catches the light and sends it downward, so the chandelier gives a warm ambient glow with a softer pool of light below. Amber lowers the light, so over a table choose lamps at the brighter end and ask for dimming to bring it down in the evening. Over a kitchen island or a desk, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

Six, nine or twelve E14 lamps by size (E12 for North America). Warm white LED at 2700K; LED keeps the heat low around the glass. Bulbs are not included. The 60 cm weighs about 18 kg (40 lb), the 80 cm about 28 kg (62 lb) and the 95 cm about 42 kg (93 lb). The fixture is hardwired; have your electrician fix it to a joist or reinforced blocking rather than a standard ceiling box.

Care

Switch off and let the lamps cool first. Dust the discs with a soft dry cloth or a feather duster, supporting each disc with your other hand. For a deeper clean, wipe the glass with a damp microfibre cloth. Dust the brass with a soft dry cloth and no polish.
