The Sabina is a linen pendant: natural linen draped by hand and gathered into a soft bowl, its scalloped rim curling upward, hung on three black chains that meet at a single point above. It comes in four diameters: 40 cm (15.7″), 60 cm (23.6″), 80 cm (31.5″) and 100 cm (39.4″). The 40 cm is 20 cm (7.9″) high, the 60 cm 25 cm (9.8″) and the 80 cm 35 cm (13.8″). It hangs over a dining table, above a bed, in a study or in an entry.

The linen

The shade is 100% natural linen, draped and gathered by hand in our workshop. The folds run vertically down the sides and the rim curls up in soft scallops. Because every Sabina is gathered by hand, the placing of the folds, the depth of the scallops and the cream tone of the cloth vary from one to the next. Linen softens with age and holds its pleating well. Switched off, it reads as a piece of sculpted cloth. Switched on, the whole bowl glows.

Why warm light matters

Linen takes on the colour of the light behind it. At 2700K the cloth glows a soft cream, like a lantern; cooler light makes it look grey and flat. Dimmed low, the whole shade glows from within. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The 40 cm (15.7″) suits a small breakfast table, a reading chair, a powder room or a small entry. The 60 cm (23.6″) suits a table for four to six, about 110 to 140 cm (43 to 55″), a bedroom or a study. The 80 cm (31.5″) suits a table for six to eight, about 150 to 200 cm (59 to 79″), or the centre of a main bedroom. The 100 cm (39.4″) suits a table for ten or more, 200 cm (79″) and above, a great room, or a hotel lobby or restaurant. Over a table, hang the bottom of the linen 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35″) above the surface.

Suspension

Three black stainless steel chains hold the shade from a single point. The standard chain is 50 cm (19.7″) and is adjusted at installation. It is made longer or shorter to order for higher ceilings and double-height rooms.

The light

Three lamps sit inside the dome. The linen glows evenly from within and keeps the lamps from showing as bright spots, and most of the light falls downward through the open bottom. It gives a soft, ambient light. Over a kitchen island or a desk, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

Three E26 lamps, up to 60 W each. Warm white LED at 2700K is recommended: it runs cooler and keeps the linen in good condition. Bulbs are not included. The 40 cm weighs about 1.8 kg (4 lb), the 60 cm about 3.2 kg (7 lb), the 80 cm about 5 kg (11 lb) and the 100 cm about 7.7 kg (17 lb). The fixture is hardwired by your electrician. It is made for indoor use in dry rooms, away from bathrooms and damp spaces.

Care

Switch off and let the lamps cool. Dust the linen with a soft, dry brush, or a vacuum on its lowest setting with a brush attachment. Keep water and cleaning products away from the cloth.

Made to order

Every Sabina is made to order and gathered by hand. The chain length can be set to your ceiling height, and dimming is available on request.
