The Smoked Glass Candle Chandelier is a candle chandelier of smoked glass tulip shades on a welded frame, in brushed brass or black. It comes in three sizes, all 41 cm (16.1″) high: Small, with 4 arms, 69 cm (27.2″) wide; Medium, with 4 arms, 107 cm (42.1″) wide; and Large, with 6 arms, 137 cm (53.9″) wide. It hangs on a 50 cm (19.7″) rod as standard, over a dining table, in a living room or in an open-plan space.

The glass

The tulip shades are hand-blown in smoked glass, a soft grey-brown tone. Because each shade is blown by hand, the shape and depth of colour vary slightly from one to the next. The smoked glass hides the lamp and tones its light down to a gentle glow.

The frame

The arms are welded to a central frame and reach out in a wide, open spread. In the Gold version the frame is brushed brass, whose warmth sits well against the grey of the glass. The Black version is finished in black, for a darker, more graphic look.

Why warm light matters

Smoked glass takes on the temperature of the lamps inside it. At 2700K it glows a warm amber-grey, like candlelight through tinted glass; cooler light makes it look cold and dull. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The Small, at 69 cm (27.2″), suits a table of about 120 to 150 cm (47 to 59″), or a room of around 3.5 × 4 m (12 × 13 ft). The Medium, at 107 cm (42.1″), suits a table of about 180 to 220 cm (71 to 87″) or a larger dining room. The Large, at 137 cm (53.9″), suits a table of 240 cm (94″) and above, a large living room or an open-plan space. Over a table, hang the bottom of the chandelier 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35″) above the surface.

Suspension

With the standard 50 cm (19.7″) rod, the chandelier hangs about 91 cm (36″) from the ceiling. Over a dining table that suits ceilings of roughly 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 8.5 ft). For higher ceilings, the rod is made longer to order, and it can be made shorter for lower rooms.

The light

The smoked glass softens the lamps, so the chandelier gives a low, warm, ambient light. If it is the main light in the room, choose brighter lamps and ask for the dimmable version to bring it down in the evening. Over a kitchen island or a desk, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

E14 lamps. Warm white LED at 2700K. Bulbs are not included. The Small weighs about 7 kg (15 lb) and the Large up to about 16 kg (35 lb). The fixture is hardwired; have your electrician fix it to a joist or reinforced blocking.

Care

Switch off and let the lamps cool first. Dust with a soft dry cloth or a feather duster. For a deeper clean, wipe the glass with a damp microfibre cloth and a little mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth, never sprayed onto the fixture. Wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth and do not use metal polish.

Every chandelier is made to order. The rod length is set to your ceiling height, and dimming is available on request.
