Beschreibung

The Brass Linear Glass Chandelier is a gently arched bar hung with hand-blown glass drops at different lengths, so it reads like a mobile of light over the table. It comes in two sizes: 9 lights at 137 cm (53.9″) wide, and 11 lights at 183 cm (72″) wide. Both measure 93 cm (36.6″) from the canopy to the longest drop, fix to a 69 cm (27.1″) canopy, and stand 123 cm (48.4″) overall with the standard rod. It is made for a long dining table, a kitchen island, a breakfast room or a generous entrance hall.

The glass

Every drop is blown by hand, free-form, so no two in the same chandelier are identical: each differs a little in shape, wall thickness and the way it catches the lamp inside. The shape is a truncated teardrop, wider at the bottom and tapering up to the fitting. The lamp sits in the upper third, so the light gathers in the lower body of each drop and it glows like a small lantern from below.

The frame

In the gold version the arch, canopy and hardware are solid brass, machined and finished by hand and left unlacquered, so the brass deepens in tone over the years. The black version has a stainless steel frame in a matte black finish. The curve of the arch is gentle, just enough to break the line of a straight bar. Each drop hangs on its own braided cable, and the cable lengths are varied on purpose.

Why warm light matters

Hand-blown glass takes on the colour of the lamp inside it. At 2700K each drop glows a soft gold and the brass looks rich; cooler light makes the glass look cold and the metal flat. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The 9-light, at 137 cm (53.9″), suits a dining table of about 210 to 250 cm (83 to 98″), seating eight to ten, or a kitchen island of about 210 to 240 cm (7 to 8 ft). The 11-light, at 183 cm (72″), suits a table of about 270 to 330 cm (106 to 130″), seating ten to fourteen, or a large island of 270 cm (9 ft) and over. Over a table or island, hang the lowest drop 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35″) above the surface. In an entrance hall, hang it at eye level over a long console so the drops read as separate objects.

Suspension

With the standard rod the chandelier measures 123 cm (48.4″) from the ceiling to the lowest drop. Over a dining table that suits ceilings of roughly 2.7 to 2.9 m (9 to 9.5 ft). The rod is made to order at any length from 30 cm to 2 m (11.8 to 78.7″), so the chandelier can be brought down into a high room, a stairwell or a double-height space. Leave a note with your ceiling height when you order.

The light

Each drop gives its own pool of light, and together they make a soft, ambient glow along the table rather than a hard downlight. From across the room it reads as one sculptural line; from the table it reads as a cluster of small lights at eye level. Over a kitchen island, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

Nine G9 lamps in the 9-light, eleven in the 11-light. Warm white LED at 2700K. Bulbs are not included. The 9-light weighs about 12 to 16 kg (26 to 35 lb) and the 11-light about 16 to 22 kg (35 to 49 lb). The fixture is hardwired; have your electrician fix it to a joist or reinforced blocking, which is essential for the 11-light given its weight and span.

Care

Switch off and let the lamps cool. Dust the drops with a soft dry cloth or a feather duster, supporting each one with your other hand. For a deeper clean, wipe the glass with a damp microfibre cloth and dry it. Dust the brass with a soft dry cloth, with no polish, and let the natural patina develop.

Made to order

Every chandelier is made to order in gold or black. The rod length is set to your ceiling, and dimming is available on request.
