The Brass Starburst Semi-Flush Mount is a low ceiling light of solid brass arms radiating from the centre, each ending in a round frosted glass shade. It comes in two sizes, both 16 cm (6.3″) high: 6 heads, 89 × 78 cm (35 × 30.7″), and 8 heads, 101 × 68 cm (39.8 × 26.8″). It suits a living room, a dining room or an entryway with limited ceiling height.

The glass

Each shade is a round globe of frosted glass. The frosting softens the light source inside to an even glow, so each shade reads as a soft point of light at the end of its arm.

The frame

The arms are solid brass and spread out from the centre in an open starburst. At only 16 cm (6.3″) deep, the whole fixture stays close to the ceiling.

Why warm light matters

Frosted glass takes the colour of the light behind it. At 2700K the shades glow a soft cream against the brass; cooler light turns them blue-white and flattens the metal. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The 6-head, at 89 × 78 cm (35 × 30.7″), suits a living or dining room of around 3.5 × 4 m (12 × 13 ft), or a table of about 150 to 180 cm (59 to 71″). The 8-head, at 101 × 68 cm (39.8 × 26.8″), is longer and narrower, so it suits a rectangular table of 180 cm (71″) and above, a larger living room or an entrance hall. Over a table, center it and line its long side up with the table.

Mounting

The fixture mounts directly to the ceiling and is 16 cm (6.3″) deep, so it keeps full headroom under ceilings from about 2.3 m (7.5 ft).

The light

The round shades send light out in every direction, onto the ceiling and down into the room, for a soft, general ambient light. Over a kitchen island or a desk, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

Six or eight light sources, one in each shade. Warm white 2700K. The 6-head weighs about 6 kg (13 lb) and the 8-head about 8 kg (18 lb). The fixture is hardwired; have your electrician fix it to a joist or reinforced blocking.

Care

Switch off and let the lamps cool first. Dust with a soft dry cloth, supporting each shade with your other hand. For a deeper clean, wipe the glass with a damp microfibre cloth and a little mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth, never sprayed onto the fixture. Wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth only, with no metal polish or abrasive cleaners.
