Brass & Glass Semi-Flush Mount Ceiling Light | CLNN2200

The Brass & Glass Semi-Flush Mount is a ceiling light of arched solid brass arms, each holding a fluted clear glass shade, set close to the ceiling. It comes in four sizes, all 32 cm (12.6″) high: 3 heads, 61 cm (24″) across; 6 heads, 70 cm (27.6″); 8 heads, 87 cm (34.3″); and 10 heads, 100 cm (39.4″). It suits a living room, a dining area or a bedroom where the ceiling is too low for a hanging chandelier.

The glass

Each shade is clear glass with fine vertical flutes. The flutes break up the lamp inside and spread its light, so the shades glow evenly with little glare. The glass is textured by hand, and the texture varies slightly from one shade to the next.

The frame

The arms are solid brass, each one arched to carry its shade out from the centre of the fixture, so the glass sits in a ring just below the ceiling.

Why warm light matters

Clear fluted glass shows the colour of the lamp inside it. At 2700K the flutes catch a soft gold light and the brass reads warm; cooler light makes the glass look grey and the metal pale. On this piece, warm white is part of the design.

Sizing and placement

The 3-head, at 61 cm (24″), suits a bedroom, study or small dining area of about 3 × 3 m (10 × 10 ft). The 6-head, at 70 cm (27.6″), suits a bedroom or dining room of around 3.5 × 4 m (12 × 13 ft). The 8-head, at 87 cm (34.3″), suits a living or dining room of around 4 × 5 m (13 × 16 ft). The 10-head, at 100 cm (39.4″), suits a large living room or open-plan space of 5 × 5 m (16 × 16 ft) and above. Over a dining table, center it on the table.

Mounting

The fixture mounts directly to the ceiling and stands 32 cm (12.6″) deep, which leaves comfortable headroom under ceilings of about 2.4 to 2.7 m (8 to 9 ft). For higher ceilings, a pendant version is available on request.

The light

The lamps sit inside the fluted shades, and the light spreads sideways through the flutes and down into the room. It gives a soft, general ambient light for the whole room. Over a desk or a kitchen worktop, keep task lighting alongside it.

Lamping and installation

One lamp in each shade: three, six, eight or ten, by size. Warm white LED at 2700K. Bulbs are not included. The 3-head weighs about 6 kg (13 lb) and the 10-head up to about 14 kg (31 lb). The fixture is hardwired; on the larger sizes, have your electrician fix it to a joist or reinforced blocking.

Care

Switch off and let the lamps cool first. Dust with a soft dry cloth, supporting each shade with your other hand. For a deeper clean, wipe the glass with a damp microfibre cloth and a little mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth, never sprayed onto the fixture. Wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth only, with no metal polish or abrasive cleaners.
